Bleacher report Cleveland Browns general manager Ray Farmer told reporters on Monday that they are unlikely to draft a franchise quarterback in the first round.
Farmer said that they would likely draft either Carson Wentz or Johnny Manziel, both of whom are projected as the No 2 overall pick.
While Farmer would not say which player they are targeting, he said that he expects the Browns to go with a quarterback, and the Browns may even go back to one of the top three picks in the draft.
As for Wentz, Farmer told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the quarterback has a high ceiling, which is why he is so highly regarded in the scouting community.
“I think he’s going to go No. 2 in the order,” Farmer said.
“The thing that’s going on with the Eagles, they’re not drafting quarterbacks very often, but they’re always going to be in the top of the draft order.
I think Wentz is a guy who is a high-end quarterback and a high prospect.”
Manziel is projected to be the No 4 pick, which means that the Browns would have to choose between a quarterback and linebacker.
If they go with Wentz instead, they will be taking a defensive lineman with their first pick, and they are also taking a safety.
Farmer told Bleacher that Wentz would be the better of the two quarterbacks, but the Browns could also go with Manziel.
“I think it would be better to go in a different direction,” Farmer told ESPN.
“Johnny has a little bit more upside.
He’s a really good quarterback.
I don’t know if it’s better to take a guy like Johnny or go with somebody who’s a little more polished.
I mean, I think both quarterbacks would be great.”
The Browns will have the first pick in the upcoming draft, which will be held on March 24.
Farmer has made it clear that the Cleveland Browns will be going for a quarterback this year, but he said during his appearance on ESPN that he has no intentions of drafting a quarterback.
He added that the team will be searching for a franchise QB, so they would like to have a quarterback before they make a decision.
With Wentz being the top quarterback on their board, Farmer is expected to draft Wentz as soon as the third round.
If the Browns go with him, they should target Manziel in the fourth round.
If Farmer goes with Wentez, the Browns should have to move on to a linebacker in the fifth round, and Farmer would be open to taking a cornerback in the sixth round, which would give the Browns a linebacker who can play inside, which could allow Manziel to slide into the slot.
However, if Farmer goes to Manziel, the team should move to a cornerback.
Farmer could also consider a quarterback or a linebacker, but Farmer did not reveal which quarterback he would choose.
